About us

History, vision and the traditions that hold the school together.

Our heritage

The school opened on 9 June 1917 in a modest estate bungalow in Ambathalawa, with 60 boys and one teacher. It grew out of a movement to educate local communities.

It moved to Sangilipalamma by 1919 and, in 1922, opened to girls, becoming a pioneering co-educational school. In the 1980s it relocated to Kotmale New Town under the Mahaweli Development Scheme, and in 1990 was established as Kotmale Maha Vidyalaya.
